16/1/2009Latest Show is a Priority
2009's exhibitions kicked off last weekend with, How to Manage When Everything is a Priority.
How to Manage' brings together Glasgow-based artists Rosemary Scanlon, Erica Mendritzki, Conor Kelly and Ufuk Gueray, alongside London-based counterparts Susan Westbrook, Trevor Kiernander and Ian Gonczarow.
Ufuk Gueray, 28-year-old Turkish-German Glasgow based painter and co-curator, explains what the exhibition is all about.
"We are bringing together a diverse group of painters with quite different approaches to image making - different strategies for dealing with the abundance of imagery in contemporary culture.
"Just about all the artists I know - certainly all the ones in the show - have heaps of images culled from newspapers, the internet, magazines, etc., that we use as source material"
Glasgow seems to fit in with well-traveled Ufuk's plans although he did complain about the weather.
He said: "There's a good sense of community spirit in the art scene in Glasgow, I think. Everyone is quite supportive of one another and you see a lot of the same faces at all the events that are going on. It's a nice size.
"I was living in Berlin before moving here, and while there are a lot of exciting things happening there, it's easy to get lost in the crowd."
The exhibition runs from 17 - 30 January 2009 at the Grace and Clark Fyfe Gallery, The Glasgow School of Art.
